About the event

At CreativeMornings Lausanne, Christophe Guberan was invited to discuss how it is okay to be Lost – how he has overcome and grown from being Lost in the process or Lost in a new language and how this has helped him understand where he is going and led him to where he is today. Join him for an exploration of what new contexts are possible when designers find their way and reclaim craft by creating their own production technologies.

The Speaker: Christophe Guberan

Christophe Guberan is a Swiss industrial designer trained at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. He currently teaches product design at both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and ECAL.

Christophe’s work has been presented at various renowned institutions: Patrick Parrish Gallery in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Design Miami, Salone del Mobile Milano and Tokyo Design Week. He has spoken at leading conferences such as What Design Can Do, Ars Electronica, SXSW, Biofabricate, Design Indaba and lectured at numerous universities e.g. Parsons School of Design and IMD business school in Lausanne. Christophe received the Hublot Design Prize in 2017 and was granted with a Swiss Design Award in 2016 and 2018. In 2014, he started collaborating with the MIT Self-Assembly Lab.

Connecting industry and academia, Christophe had the opportunity to work with leading companies such as Alessi, USM, Steelcase and Google. It led him to rethink production processes, to play with materials and textures, and to hack existing technologies.

His unique approach to product design lies at the intersection of experimentation, new technologies and a rigorous sense of aesthetics.

Christophe endeavors to appropriate digital production technologies in order to explore their formal or functional potential. Always in search of simple and open formatting principles, he imagines new types of production or applications, for which these machines were not initially intended.

Not content to wait for manufacturing tools and companies to meet his ideas, Christophe is part of a new generation of creatives who use rapid prototyping and digital manufacturing to control every part of the production process. His experience developing projects will offer insights into what it means for designers to drive every aspect of production in a completely integrated and controlled way, what conditions are essential for building effective experimental partnerships and collaborations, and how digital fabrication can give designers control over what ultimately matters: making essential products that people use and value over time
